Welcome to the new Southport Masters web site!

The information from the previous version has been brought over here and organized as well as updated.  If you think that things that should be here are missing let me know and I’ll see about getting it here.

When you register you’ll be able to post content you feel would be useful and relevant to the club and to gun owners in general.  There’s an archive of posts so you can always go back and see things you may have missed.

Have a look around to get familiar with the new layout and organization of information.  It’s a big difference from how the site looked and functioned in the past but it’s also a huge improvement on our ability to get out interesting and timely information as well as keep club members informed.

Southeasterm Wisconsin Rifle Association Fall Rifle Leauge and the Mid State Postal League

Posted By SteveP on September 10, 2009

Fall and Winter Rifle Leagues The Southeast Wisconsin Rifle Association consists of a number of local Club teams, SWRA sponsor indoor leagues for rimfire and air rifle matches. The Sotheastern Wisconsin Rifle Association also handles match results and shooter classification at the end of each season. Interestingly, a shooters classification is adjusted up or down depending their present performance records.
Team will participate in the 2009-2010 season beginning of October for the indoor air rifle and smallbore season. The league typically shoots one or two practices a month and every Thursday evening alternating matches between the Southport range in Kenosha and with the Waukesha Gun Club facility located in Waukesha. This is a semi-formal, “fun” league and the doors open at 6:30 PM, with matches beginning at 7:30 PM. There are 15 to 20 shooters on average at each match. New shooters are encouraged to come and particapate or attend the practice sessions to learn about rifle competition.
Although the NRA National and Sectional competitions fire 120 rounds in a three-position event, but the indoor league shoots 40 rounds each match, 10 rounds each of prone, sitting, kneeling and offhand (standing) positions. Scopes are permitted, although not necessary. Some clothing or equipment is essentcal such as shooting coats and glove to steady the body. Each shot gets its own bullseye. The target sheet has 11 or 12 bullseyes, with the center two reserved for sighters. Any ammo is suitable but Standard velocity 22 ammo is preferred.
The Southport team had the oppertunty to win the 2008and 2009 Mid State Postal league. Southport Rifle Team members are always looking for and willing to assist new shooters. Although any 22 cal. rimfire rifle, (peep sights recommended) is permitted, beginners should consider a used bolt action rifle or match rifle such as the Winchester model 75, 52 , Remington 37, 40X, 513, 540. More experienced shooters are now using Anschutz and Walther rifles. If your interested many of the Southport team member have extra equipment and are happy to bring it for someone to use. NRA affiliated clubs, such as SWRA, can purchase rifles from Anshutz, Kimber and Mossberg the CMP or NRA Programs offer very good prices. Team members promised, “If your rifle isn’t going to work, we can always bring extra rifles for you to use.” The course of fire is single-shot with 10 round in 10 minutes for Prone and Sitting positions, and 15 minutes for Kneeling and Offhand positions.
A number of the SWRA members also participate in the Indoor Sectional matches held at UW Oshkosh. The shoot consists of ISU (International Shooting Union) and NRA rimfire, and air rifle rules. Each match is 120 rounds for smallbore rifle and 60 rounds for air rifle . These event are really challenge lot of fun to shooting.” And to round out the annual activities, Camp Perry also facilitates small-bore rifle competitions each summer. If your interested in rifle competition or shooting in this years League contact David Christenson at 262-681-0674 or Bob Churchill at 262-835-4141.
So dust off your 22 rifle and come shoot for Southport! Our first pactice is Thursday October 1, 2009 range opens at 6:30 PM.
